This category is for Interior fit out of an existing commercial space. 

This category is for buildings that are formally classified by Local Councils or the Historic Places Trust irrespective of their purpose. 

This category is only for retail projects. These may include shops or any form of retail developments, where the primary purpose is direct-to-customer services including repair, renovation or alteration of the same. 

This category is for offices and business spaces that are not retail in nature taking in buildings that are considered places of work in both the public and private sectors including repair, renovation or alteration of the same. ie: office blocks. 

This category includes buildings that offer services to the public including repair, renovation or alteration of the same. ie.: courts, police stations, fire stations, government research facilities, public ablution blocks and ambulance facilities. Owned by government or local bodies. 

Any project that is industrial in nature including repair, renovation or alteration of the same, ie: manufacturing/processing plants, wharves/bridges, tunnels/dams, warehousing facilities and farm buildings. 

Specifically for buildings and developments where the public utilises the facilities/space in the tourism, visitor or leisure space including repair, renovation or alteration of the same. Ie: Visitor centres, hotels, swimming pools, churches. This category excludes retirement villages, which should be entered into the Residential Project category. These must be privately owned. 

All projects built for the purpose of education, from pre-school to tertiary, private training establishments (PTEs), and iwi/whānau based training developments including repair, renovation or alteration of the same. 

All projects built to provide ‘direct’ health services should be entered into the Health Project category. This includes GP services, hospital developments and veterinary and specialist clinics, including repair, renovation or alteration of the same. 

Major commercial developments in the residential sector, whether apartment buildings, retirement villages, or multi-dwelling developments including repair,  renovation or alteration of the same. 

This category celebrates projects that support the physical systems enabling the production and delivery of goods and services - with a focus on horizontal construction. This includes the development, repair, renovation or alteration of transport networks (roads, railways, ports, waterways), utilities (power, gas, water, telecommunications), and public works (dams, canals, irrigation systems).

This award may be given at the discretion  of the judges for a specific outstanding  project or element of a project that they  feel is worthy of recognition. 

All projects will automatically be eligible  for one of these awards based on their total project value: 

  • Commercial Project Under $1 million 

  • Commercial Project $1-$3 million  

  • Commercial Project $3-$10 million  

  • Commercial Project $10-$25 million 

  • Commercial Project Over $25 million 

The Registered Master Builders Supreme Awards for the New Zealand Commercial Projects of the Year will be awarded to the two most outstanding entries in this years competition. One for the project with the highest points for a project under $10 million, and the other will be awarded to the project with the highest points for a project over $10 million. 

This award is based on the environmental features of the design and will only be awarded if deserved. It recognises the relationship our man-made buildings have with the environment and responsibility we have as an industry.

  • Sympathy with the local environment 

  • Efficient and flexible design 

  • Reuse of existing materials or infrastructure - in whole or part 

  • Lifecycle of building and components 

  • Selection of materials - low embodied carbon, durable, biodegradable, reusable and from renewable or abundant sources 

  • Minimal imported energy use and efficient water use 

  • Environmentally friendly construction practices e.g. minimising waste to landfill, managing runoff from site  

  • Greenstar rating, or other environmental rating system where appropriate 

This award recognises that transformation  is happening in our sector and is awarded  to the project that has taken an innovative  approach and achieved a positive outcome.  Innovation could be in the field of process,  design, construction, materials or  technology. 

Awarded at the judges’ discretion for use of technology that aims to shape the industry towards a more efficient and sustainable era.
